In recent years, Ubisoft games have rarely become unanimous favorites among players and critics. And yet, the lion’s share of releases break sales records and get decent scores on rating aggregators. However, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is a different case. The sequel to the successful Wildlands, instead of developing its ideas, introduced only an unnecessary level system and color gradation of things – the notorious “role-playing elements”.
Over time, developers began to learn from mistakes and refine the game. But the media focused only on controversial innovations – for example, Breakpoint recently became a testing ground for the hated NFTs. In fact, Ubisoft has turned Breakpoint into the most accessible and beautiful tactical shooter at the moment.
Road to breakout point
The qualitative changes in Ghost Recon: Breakpoint began in March 2020, already six months after the release, when the Deep Dive mode appeared in the game. He turned off the color gradation of loot, limited the number of weapons carried, and when reloading, the rest of the cartridges in the magazine were lost.
All these features can be configured in a special menu. If you want, the character will carry not one main weapon, but two. If it’s more convenient for you, the interface will be as detailed as before. In addition, enemies have become smarter in Breakpoint, the nights have become darker, and the character began to die from a couple of shots – but only if the player wants it.
With the color grading turned off, it finally made sense to modify weapons. And here Breakpoint turns into a game for lovers of light “gun porn”. Each gun is configured in detail in a separate menu, it can be cleaned and painted, changed in small things. And upgrade for special points is the only way to increase its performance without new sights, barrels and grips.

The next important innovation was AI partners, which for some reason were not on the release. Now, for a comfortable game, you do not need to convene as many as three friends, which greatly facilitated the game in Deep Dive. And after the release of the third campaign, Red Patriot, the enemies have become even smarter, the item wheel has expanded, and the raid location has become available in single player.
Finally, Operation Motherland appeared in Breakpoint, dedicated to the complete liberation of Auroa from the military junta three months after the main campaign. The update added a mode to the game that completely changes the approach to the passage of the plot. Now the map is divided into zones of influence, and with the help of various activities, you need to gradually reclaim the island. A full-scale conflict unfolded here, within the framework of which you can meet random clashes between the military and the rebels in some forest. In addition, throughout Auroa, at the launch of Motherland, the season changes to autumn-winter, which adds variety to the already beautiful landscapes.
And yet, even these updates did not attract much attention to the game from outside, so Ubisoft went on huge discounts. This approach worked with other not very successful releases of the company – take at least The Division 2, which a month after the release could be bought for 100 rubles. As a result, Breakpoint at almost every sale can be snatched for the price of a small indie game complete with all additions and events.
If you play Breakpoint with default world settings, it’s hard to enjoy. It’s still the same clunky looter shooter that has the gameplay formula of Borderlands clumsily glued to the tactical nature of Ghost Recon. But on the highest world difficulty and gameplay settings, the game flourishes, and the best element of it is … outposts. It is from their capture that most of the plot tasks consist.
In any other Ubisoft game, the base siege process is about the same: come, clear, forget. But in Breakpoint’s Deep Dive, each base turns into a challenging puzzle. You have to think about which side is better to enter and in what order to kill the opponents, and the red plate “Reinforcements called” makes you not smirk, but restart the siege – it is unlikely that you will be able to survive the influx of enemies.
At the same time, it is very difficult to think through everything to the smallest detail. First you need to explore the enemy base with the help of a drone, but to complete the quest you still have to go to the location yourself. And at this moment, you will definitely stumble upon opponents that you did not notice before. Indoor shootouts become a separate challenge. For example, my partner and I constantly got surrounded in spacious halls – we had to use four types of visors and revive each other over and over again. As a result, the clashes ended in powerless pistol shots from behind cover, because after a severe wound, another weapon cannot be used, and it will not work to heal in the environment.

Another important layer of the game is the number of items of each type carried. It is very easy to find yourself in a position where there is nothing to cure, and the task has not yet been completed. You have to drag along with one gun without the ability to throw a grenade or inject medicine, endure the special effects of dizziness and constantly crouch against the wall. This makes the cost of a mistake even higher.

AI teammates are much easier to play with, but they also die quickly if there are too many enemies. The main advantage of the allies is in synchronized shots. In the case of real people, you have to coordinate actions and wait until the team takes a position. Artificial intelligence does not need all this – it gets anywhere from anywhere and from the most insane distance. Yes, and special abilities use at its discretion. Sometimes out of place – for example, “shine through” the location for the presence of enemies too early.

In this sense, with live partners is much more interesting. As with any cooperative game, they add an element of surprise. The AI, when you get hurt, will come and take out 50 people behind the scenes, a couple of anti-aircraft guns and a tank, just to revive you, but a real person may well lose the firefight and lie down next to you.
Outposts are not the only element of the story campaign. Sometimes it is necessary, for example, to eliminate or interrogate a specific target, which is constantly moving, accompanied by a convoy. And such tasks in the “Deep Dive” mode also turn into a test. It took my partner and me several attempts to catch the convoy on a mined section of the road, neutralize the commander’s escort and not accidentally kill him in the process. Once we even made a mistake in determining the route of the enemy, because of which we had to walk to a convenient intersection and prepare a trap in a couple of seconds. This is the meaning of Deep Dive – any routine activity in this mode generates unique stories.
Movement takes a special place in the complicated gameplay. First, in Deep Dive, you won’t be able to call a helicopter to any of the hundreds of camps scattered around the world. You will either have to look for it on enemy targets, or take it from the only resistance base. At the same time, there are no markers in the quests themselves and you need to move according to geographical descriptions and photographs. For example, in one of the tasks, you will have to collect data on the general’s hideout in three different places. But if you find him with one or two clues, the quest will automatically continue.

Not Walker Alone
In recent years, Ubisoft has begun experimenting with its approach to storytelling. In Assassin’s Creed, the story structure has become reminiscent of Red Dead Redemption 2, with more colorful characters. In Watch Dogs: Legion, the writers focused on charismatic villains, simply abandoning the prescribed protagonist. But Breakpoint was unlucky in this sense – in the campaign available on release, the only bright spot was the main antagonist Cole Walker, played by Jon Bernthal. The rest of the characters in the first episode do not stand up to criticism – they speak in stereotyped phrases, and they look like extras from the same Watch Dogs.
But after the release, the developers decided not just to improve the story, but to combine it with merciless fan service. Here you have the terminators that flooded Auroa, and a separate campaign with Sam Fisher, and a special episode for fans of the classic Ghost Recon. At the same time, it is interesting that the additional campaigns that came out as a result do not correspond to what the developers planned at first. Red Patriot’s announcement, for example, says: “We decided to take the story in a different direction, after carefully analyzing player feedback since release, coupled with our creative vision for this story.”

If there are few story missions or you don’t feel much nostalgia for Tom Clancy’s sub-series, then you can do online entertainment like raids or special operations. For the first, however, you will have to assemble a team of four people, and for the second, turn on the color gradation of equipment.
Even with all the innovations, Breakpoint is far from perfect – it’s hard to ignore the nightmarish original story, poor optimization, and a large number of bugs. Your character, for example, can jump off a dock into the water if you press the control button on the boat, and corpses often start flying when they come into contact with physical objects like boxes.
But the way the developers have modernized the gameplay shows that Ubisoft does not give a damn about the roots of the series and the opinions of the players. Breakpoint is one of the company’s deepest games at the moment, on par with niche tactical shooters. This is the best entry point into the subgenre and a good reason to restore faith in the French company.
At best unremarkable, at worst unplayable, Ghost Recon Breakpoint is 2019′s worst game. The Verdict. Despite its disappointing start, Breakpoint is an explosive, entertaining adventure. It doesn't do anything new, but if you're playing with friends then it's a great way to spend a few hours, blowing things up and exploring a huge open-world map.
Ubisoft is no longer making content for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint -- including its controversial NFTs. The official Ghost Recon Twitter account confirmed that March saw the final update for the game, although servers for both Breakpoint and its predecessor Wildlands will continue to be maintained.
